Priestly Spells

General Spells for Ainur worshippers:

Spells for specific Valar:


Before we talk spells, it must be remembered that Priests of the Ainur are not Ainur themselves. OK, that IS obvious. But I say this because you will not see any one Priesthood that has a particularly wide variety of spells. The spells listed have been purposefully restricted, partially due to earlier comments, in that magic must be necessarily restrictive to maintain its special air in the eyes of the mundane (by far the largest population), partially due to the necessity for a Priest of a specific Ainur to follow the path of their Ainur, and part and parcel of that, so that there is some distinction and differentiation between the Priests themselves.

Gandalf may have thrown fire around, used holding spells and been very commanding and influential, but he WAS an Ainur, and therefore capable of some fairly liberal sub-create effects. Each of the Ainur were, likewise capable of liberal sub-creation, but they were nevertheless gifted in certain areas by Eru, and the spells available to their Priests are therefore necessarily restricted to reflect this.

Priests of the Maiar take the same spells as the Priests of the Valar that the Maiar is most closely associated. For the avoidance of doubt, the Valar associations for the Maiar that are listed in this document are as follows:

Eönwë - Manwë
Ossë - Ulmo
Uinen - Ulmo
Arien - Varda
Tilion - Oromë
Salmar - Ulmo
Ilmarë - Varda
Sauron - Melkor/Morgoth
Valaraukar - Melkor/Morgoth

Although Sauron was originally a Maiar of Aulë, he was corrupted to Melkor's service before Arda was even formed, so for all intensive purposes he is considered a Maiar of Melkor/Morgoth.

List of Priestly Spells

Some Priests of the Ainur have only a few spells to choose from. This is partially to do with the lack of spells within standard C&S that match the realms of influence linked to the Ainur in question. It is also due to the fact that I don't have the time to invent a whole raft of spells that would be appropriate, just for this document. Plus a long list of spells is not necessarily needed, depending on the Priesthood in question. For example, I can't see that playing a Priest of Tulkas would necessarily be enhanced with, or benefit from, a long list of spells, when it may be more in line with Tulkas for the Priest to relying rather on their athletic + combat ability and loyalty instead. They have some, just not that many.

However, all Priests of the Ainur gain the following spells, when they have achieved the appropriate ML.

* To calculate the MRs for the variety of types of Circles of Protection, use the difference between the standard C&S Circles, in terms of the lowest MR spell and the specific Circle to be cast and add this difference to the base MR above. For example, the base MR for a Circle of Protection vs. Evil is 1. Against Lycanthropes it is 3. Therefore in Middle-earth to cast a Lesser Circle of Protection against Lycanthropes would be a 4 MR spell rather than a 3 MR spell.
